During the third quarter of 2018, the Valuation Committee, which is composed of three independent directors, adjusted the fair values of the private companies in our portfolio. In arriving at these determinations and consistent with the Fund’s valuation procedures, and ASC 820 (formerly FAS 157), the Valuation Committee took into account many factors, including the performance of the portfolio companies, recent transactions in the companies’ securities, as well as the impact of changes in market multiples within certain sectors.

Throughout the quarter, the Fund continued its efforts to manage its portfolio prudently, including working with its portfolio companies and their management teams to seek to enhance performance and uncover potential exit opportunities. In August, Revasum, the Fund’s second largest holding, announced the completion of an $8 million pre-IPO round of funding as well as its intention to pursue an IPO in Australia.

In the third quarter of 2018, the Fund continued to monetize its investment in Nutanix. We sold 223,000 shares of Nutanix common stock during the quarter, realizing a gain of approximately $8.5 million in the process. The Fund reported net realized and unrealized gains on investments, net of deferred taxes, of approximately $38.2 million for the quarter. The Fund earned approximately $0.98 million in investment income and reported a net investment loss, net of deferred taxes, of approximately $11.49 million. During the quarter, The Fund made an initial $1.0 million investment in Lyncean Technologies, a developer of compact accelerator-based light sources for commercial and research applications. We also made follow-on investments in Hera Systems, IntraOp Medical, QMAT, Revasum, Telepathy, Vufine, and Wrightspeed during the third quarter, totaling approximately $10.5 million.

Share Repurchase Plan
On August 31, 2018, the Fund announced a plan to repurchase up to $2 million worth of SVVC stock in the open market by March 31, 2019. Through the end of September, we had repurchased and retired 26,110 shares of stock at a total cost of approximately $420,000. As of September 30, 2018, the Fund had 7,276,036 shares outstanding.
